Read 180
What are we finding here?
Read 180 is an online reading language tool that takes students from phonics to fluency to proficiency.
To better serve teachers/students several months of contextual inquiry were conducted. The analysis of the qualitative research highlighted student issues with Read 180.
From the student's perspective the problem frames are:
1. Why am I using Read 180?
2. What am I supposed to do in Read180?
From the Read 180 client's perspective the problem frames are:
1. How do we create a seamless onboarding experience that addresses student needs?
2. In a noisy environment how do we draw student focus and keep them on track?
What are our constraints?
Rapid implementation of the onboarding redesign. It should be a layer that exists on-top of the original 180 design.
Onboarding must encompass all parts of the in-app learning journey (Knowledge Cluster selector, Segment selector, Instructional Zones).
Onboarding needs to be accessible for diverse learners grades 3-12: students in special education, English language learners, students with dyslexia, Tier II/III striving readers.
What has the qualitative research revealed?
The noisy classroom environment makes a solely auditory onboarding difficult.
Students are proficient with advanced game-based UI and design language.
Some students will linger on static screens indefinitely if there aren't clear constraints or incentivizing features.
Incorporates elements of the AGES Learning Theory (Attention is Critical & Emotions Govern).
Onboarding/Off-boarding is rapid, doesn't rely on audio, and establishes a clearer design language that can be a scaffold for Segment Selector/Zone Menu screens.
Highlights the learning journey fully in the onboarding and addresses student questions regarding the why and what of Read 180.
